Woloszyn recounts the events during World War II which led her from her small Polish town to being taken by the Russian army to a prisoner camp, and then to working in an orphanage and ultimately joining her brother and spending two years in the Middle East as a soldier and then to Scotland as part of the Polish Royal Airforce.

Cockroach Sandwiches

When my whole family was living on the streets—there’s ten of us, all my little brothers and sisters, my mom and dad—we used to get these sandwiches. Then someone was stealing our sandwiches when we were asleep. So my dad put cockroaches in one.
