| Second Annual
Cine Gay Showcase: Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Films
Returning to the festival for a second year is the ever-fabulous Cine Gay showcase. This year, we are honored to bring you some of the best international gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) films of 2006 that will make your cheer, laugh, cry, and shake your head in disbelief.
Throughout its fourteen years of exhibition, the festival has always embraced diversity in independent film. The Cine Gay showcase was developed last year as part of MEDIA ARTS CENTER SAN DIEGO continuing mission to help correct the often distorted images seen on television and in movies, and to challenge the historical exclusion of under-represented communities in the media. The first showcase highlighted experiences of gay life in different corners of the world, underlining the universal experience as well as the unique expressions of our GLBT brothers and sisters.
This year, we have a showcase that continues to reflect the diversity of the Latino community with its theme of family life. Loosely defined, the theme is explored through dramas, comedies, and documented reality. It has been suggested that all three feature films and both documentaries should be required viewing for festival goers, regardless of how they identify their sexuality. We hope that you will explore these amazing films that bring their own distinctive mark to the 2007 edition of Cine Gay!
We are proud to have some of the brightest talent participating in this showcase, including the introduction to San Diego audiences to one of Spain’s rising stars, Biel Durán (La Buena Voz & Salvador), who has been selected as one of the festival’s 2007 Top 10 to Watch! Also, the Festival welcomes the return of filmmakers Carlos Portugal (East Side Story) and Mary Guzman (Do The Math) who are joined by first time participant, Director Sebastian Cordona (Through Thick and Thin).
We hope that you will join us for another fantastic Cine Gay Celebration following March 11th screening of La Buena Voz / The Good Voice co-presented by FilmOUT at the remodeled BRASS RAIL [No Cover!] to meet Biel Duran and other visiting celebrities from the festival! Special thank you to THE BRASS RAIL, IN MAGAZINE, and BAJA BETTYS for supporting this year's event. This is an offical SONIDO LATINO event sponsored by WaMu [located across the street from THE BRASS RAIL on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Robinson Avenue].
Last year, several of the Cine Gay feature films completely sold out, even after repeat screenings. Because of this year’s caliber of films, expect the same. So plan your festival participation early and buy your tickets on-line well ahead of time.
