Voices of Change is a year long digital storytelling project that will record and preserve the voices of important community leaders in the neighborhood of Barrio Logan. The 15-week video production, education and training program works with local San Diego youth over the course of a year to produce a total of five short 10-15 minute documentaries profiling Roger Cazares, former president of the MAAC Project, Father Richard Brown, longtime resident priest of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Barrio Logan, Victor Ochoa, Chicano muralist, activist and teacher, and two other important leaders to be announced January 2007.
Voices of Change is a continuation of last year’s digital storytelling project “Youth Voices – Community Stories” and continues to help sustain, support, celebrate and maintain community identity and pride in Barrio Logan, an area that is widely regarded as a spiritual center for Latino civic engagement.
The oral histories gathered in the Barrio Logan projects have given voice to featured participants while providing instructive models for leadership, community building and civic engagement. Youth documentation of residents’ life histories strengthen communities by re-building intergenerational ties, training future leaders, preserving life stories and has offered a model to help other communities’ maintain their cultural survival.
