18 Years of Celebration & Discovery!

MISSION STATEMENT: MEDIA ARTS CENTER SAN DIEGO nurtures and supports media artists working in film, video, audio, and computer-based multimedia. The organization was founded to challenge the historical exclusion of under-represented communities from the media field, and distorted images of these communities by mainstream media. MEDIA ARTS CENTER SAN DIEGO seeks to provide a forum for and promote the diversity of interests of San Diego Border Region media artists through regular screenings, educational outreach, film distribution, film festivals, production and technical assistance, scholarships and fiscal sponsorships.

BACKGROUND:
The initial concept for the organization began seventeen years ago as "Cine Estudiantil: The Chicano & Native American Student Film Festival". University and high school students participated in film screenings, discussions and community action projects, using the Latino film genre as the impetus. Now recognized as the "San Diego Latino Film Festival," the arts showcase has developed into one of the largest and most well-respected Latino film festivals in the country. Over 149,000 people have attended past festivals, and 1,200 films and videos from across Latin America and the United States have been screened. Past festival guests have included such renowned individuals as Alfonso Cuaron, Diego Luna, Gael Garcia Bernal, Roselyn Sanchez, Maria Conchita Alonso, Barbara Mori, Adam Rodriguez, Alfonso Arau, Ana de la Reguera, Diego Luna, Danny Trejo, John Leguizamo, Freddy Rodriguez, Bruno Barretto, Rodrigo Prieto, Carlos Cauron, Paul Rodriguez, Luis Valdez, Tony Plana, Lupe Ontiveros, Elipidia Carrillo, Lourdes Portillo, Arturo Ripstein, Gregory Nava, Patssi Valdez, Edward James Olmos, Moctesuma Esparza, Ray Bradbury, Jacob Vargas, Nancy de los Santos and hundreds of other emerging and established Latino filmmakers.

Current MEDIA ARTS CENTER SAN DIEGO Programs & Services Include:

EXHIBITION

Annual San Diego Film Festival: celebrates films and videos by Latinos and/or about the Latino experience, screening over 140 works from across Latin America and throughout the United States. Each year approximately 100 actors, film and video makers visit and participate in the festival. 18,000 people attend screenings, workshops and enjoy ¡Arte Latino! and ¡Sonido Latino! happening throughout San Diego.

Cinema en tu Idioma: is a monthly showcase of the best and latest Spanish language Cinema. Every month over 1,000 San Diegans are given the rare opportunity to see films that are normally not distributed to this region.

Open Screening Night: monthly screenings feature the latest San Diego/ Tijuana area shorts, free popcorn, refreshments, and networking opportunities in MEDIA ARTS CENTER SAN DIEGO Microcinema"

Likewise, Cine Club! and Special Screenings happen throughout the region.

YOUTH MEDIA

Teen Producers Project: is a media literacy and video production program for youth from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds living in the San Diego/ Tijuana border region, who have been historically neglected and negatively portrayed by mainstream mass media. Professional media artists engage youth, ages 9-18, in media arts and emerging technologies for self-expression, communication and social change. The empowering projects create opportunities for youth to problem solve and gain leadership skills to strengthen their communities. The Teen Producers Project works with over 200 youth per year in partnership with the MAAC PROJECT, San Diego County Office of Education's Migrant Education Program, ACCESS, and San Diego Youth At Work's Yo Spot.

Currently, the Teen Producers' TU VOZ TV series airs on local and national cable channels. Likewise, the Barrio Logan: Youth Voices and Community Stories Project with the City of San Diego Central Library helps youth document and preserve their community's stories.  Professional / Staff Development: provide hands-on workshops for staff and administrators from community -based organizations with strategies for strengthening media arts experiences and linking the media arts to other community development activities. Staff workshops are often coordinated with youth workshops resulting in an energized staff and long-term benefits for youth.
