Robert  Young

Tribute – Robert Young Join the 14th Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival, as we pay tribute to one of Latino Cinema’s important directors and trailblazers. Without a doubt, most research of early independent Latino cinema includes acclaimed film director Robert Young. He was already 32 when he made his first feature-length film in 1957, a documentary called Secrets of the Reef. He bounced around the studios and major television networks for a while, turning to more politically engaging subjects, trying and not always succeeding to get them seen. Then came Alambrista! (1977), his first fictional feature. The handheld camera work, the gentle telling of the brutal story of illegal farm laborers, the touches of humor as Roberto, one of them, tries to blend in with the gringos, all led to a Camera d'Or at Cannes in 1978. That - and the funding secured from PBS and the National Endowment for the Humanities by producer Moctesuma Esparza - made possible his next acclaimed feature The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, featuring an early important performance by an actor who has become a stalwart of Latino filmmaking: Edward James Olmos. To this day, Edward James Olmos and Robert Young are great collaborators. Mr. Young is an Honorary Board member of Olmos’ Los Angeles International Latino Film Festival and he was a Producer for Olmos’ films, Walkout and American Me. Both Alambrista and The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez are requirements in Chicano/Latino Film Studies courses at universities across the United States. Although Mr. Young has a filmagraphy that would fit an entire festival catalogue, some of and Mr. Young’s important work that has influenced and become apart of Latino Cinema include: Alambrista (1977, Director), The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez (1982, Director), Roosters (1993, Director), Walkout (Producer, 2006), and American Me (Producer, 1992). In honor of Mr. Young and his important role in developing what is today’s Latino Cinema, the 14th Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival will present Mr. Young with a Premio Corazon Tribute Award, prior to the 30th Anniversary screening of Alambrista (1977, Mexico) on Saturday, March 17th at 6:30 p.m.
