| Cine de Oro Tribute – German Robles
Join the 14th Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival, as we pay tribute to one of the classic stars of Mexico’s Golden Age of Cinema.
Born in Gijon, Spain in 1929, German Robles made the transatlantic journey to Mexico with his mother when he was seventeen. In 1952 he appeared in his first theatrical play, EL MARTIR DEL CALVARIO, and five years later he starred in his first film, the important EL VAMPIRO, under the direction of Fernando Mendez. Playing the part of the vampire, Count Karol de Lavud, Robles handled his role with sophistication and grace. EL VAMPIRO was shown in many countries, and is rumored to have influenced Christopher Lee's portrayal as a suave Count Dracula in Hammer's HORROR OF DRACULA. Robles followed this film with a sequel, EL AUTUAD DE VAMPIRO, and other horror genre roles in such films as THE LIVING HEAD and THE BRAINIAC. He also played a vampire count in a series of four serial-like NOSTRADAMUS films, which are unheralded and impressive contributions in this special genre. Through the years, he has continued acting in the horror and fantastique genres, as well as in dramas, both in film and on television, particularly now in telenovelas. German Robles has also appeared in theatre (most recently in the long-running LA DAMA DE NEGRO) and his voice graces a Spanish reading of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES.
Mr. Robles’ work still resonates to this day. Popular Mexican filmmakers such as Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, HellBoy, Cronos) are now continuing the tradition that began with films like El Vampiro, and with such actors like German Robles.
In honor of Mr. Robles and his important role in developing what is today’s Mexican Cinema, the 14th Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival will present Mr. Robles with a Premio Corazon Tribute Award, prior to the screening of El Vampiro (1957, Mexico) on Saturday, March 10th at 8:00 p.m. |
